Likeness: Early Postmortem Photography and the Pornography of Death is a 90-page book that analyzes the shifting cultural attitudes towards death in America. I wrote Likeness from an academic perspective, but the design departs from traditional art history books. Owing to the inherently disconcerting topic of death, Likeness is at once injected with unexpected, intentionally awkward elements, while still harkening to the traditional, academic roots of the subject.Copywriting, Graphic Design, Photography2012 -
Advocacy poster for Banned Book Week. Each year, Banned Book Week challenges rampant book censorship in democratic arenas, such as public libraries and public schools. The American Library Association staunchly believes that it is unconstitutional to restrict the expression of a person, simply because the ideas are unconventional or unpopular. The design thus incorporates a page from George Orwell’s 1984—appropriating themes of oppression and censorship to buttress the meaning of the poster.Graphic Design2011 -
GROW is a program that works in the elementary schools of Lawrence, Kansas to promote different ways in which children can “grow” in their lives. A 70-page graphic novel in both French and English, Sugar & Vice traces the adventure of Cubby—a young gummy bear who is oppressed by the evil King Cookie—and explores an unprecedented methodology to teach foreign languages. Rather than formatting the French text on one page and the English text on the opposing page, the story is formatted one-to-one on a single page and codifies each language in its own color. Using both illustrations and adjacent lines of translation as a resource, novice readers can bolster their comprehension of a foreign language.Graphic Design, Illustration2012
